The University of Lagos, UNILAG, has taken another step toward fully restoring its Students’ Union with the election of a new President and General Secretary for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The election, held on Friday, March 6, 2026, was coordinated by the Directorate of Student Affairs under the leadership of the Dean, Johnson Agunsoye.

The voting exercise took place at the Common Room of Moremi Hall on the university campus.

According to university authorities, the election formed part of the transition framework designed to reestablish the Students’ Union after a period of inactivity.

Eligible voters were drawn from the current set of Faculty Presidents within the institution, in line with the guidelines approved for the restoration process.

At the conclusion of the exercise, Bolaji Akinpelu of the Faculty of Arts was elected Students’ Union President after securing nine votes.

Daniel Solomon of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics also polled nine votes to emerge as the General Secretary.

Speaking after the election, Professor Agunsoye described the process as a fulfilment of the commitment made by the Vice-Chancellor, Folasade T. Ogunsola, to facilitate the return of the Students’ Union in the university.

He noted that the restoration of the union is intended to provide students with a platform to express their views and participate actively in campus governance.

According to him, the initiative is also aimed at preparing students for leadership roles and encouraging them to develop solution-driven approaches to issues affecting the university community.

The university officials say the development marks a significant milestone in the gradual process toward the full restoration of the Students’ Union at the University of Lagos.
