Academic activities at the University of Jos have been disrupted as speakers started an indefinite strike following the non-payment of their March 2026 wages.
The Chairman of the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, verified the development in Jos on Wednesday, specifying that members would withdraw their services up until the exceptional wages are settled.
According to him, the commercial action worked on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with speakers suspending all academic responsibilities.
In a notification circulated among members, the union expressed discontentment over the delay, attributing the concern to the Workplace of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The declaration, signed by the branch leadership, directed lecturers to halt all main duties, consisting of lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings, till payment is made.
It noted that the action lines up with resolutions reached by the union’s National Executive Council in addition to decisions taken at the branch level.
The union further discussed that initial findings suggested the hold-up did not stem from the university, as its bursary department had actually reportedly completed the essential wage processing.
ASUU criticised what it described as neglect for lecturers’ well-being, warning that continued delays might undermine industrial stability within the organization.
Members were prompted to comply completely with the strike instruction, with the union showing that a tracking team would be released to guarantee adherence.
The commercial action is expected to impact academic activities at the institution until the concern is resolved.
