The Edo State Federal government has ordered the instant closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Location following intelligence reports caution of a prepared mass kidnapping of students by presumed abductors.

The impacted schools are Ososo Grade school, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School, according to a circular issued by the Edo State Ministry of Education and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Enodolomwanyi Otamere.

The decision followed a security advisory apparently provided by the State Security Service (SSS), which alerted of an alleged plot by thought outlaws to target schools in the Edo North Senatorial District.

According to intelligence reports, security operatives obstructed interactions in between two suspects who apparently discussed abducting schoolchildren after previous efforts to kidnap wealthy individuals stopped working to generate significant ransom payments.

The report showed that the suspects believed the abduction of trainees would draw in greater federal government attention and increase the possibility of receiving big ransoms and other concessions.

Security issues magnified after the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect who was apparently performing security around Makeke Secondary School on June 5. Authorities said the suspect’s activities raised fears that preparations for the prepared operation were already underway.

In action, the SSS advised security agencies to strengthen security around schools and other educational institutions, particularly in Edo North. The firm also recommended releasing extra security workers, increasing surveillance operations, and improving partnership amongst security firms, local vigilantes, and hunters.

Describing the federal government’s action, Otamere stated the closure was essential to secure trainees, instructors, and surrounding neighborhoods.

“The Ministry of Education has gotten intelligence reports and advisories from appropriate security companies regarding reliable hazards to the safety of students, personnel, and school neighborhoods in some parts of Akoko Edo Local Government Location,” he mentioned.

The permanent secretary revealed the suspension of all scholastic and non-academic activities in the affected schools until further notice.

However, he clarified that prospects sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Assessment (WASSCE) would continue to access their examination centres under strict security arrangements.

Otamere also directed school principals to ensure the organized release of trainees to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities, and keep close communication with federal government authorities and security firms.

He even more urged homeowners and moms and dads to remain calm and comply with security companies as efforts continue to neutralise the hazard and bring back regular academic activities in the affected communities.

The closure comes amid growing concerns over insecurity and school kidnappings in parts of Nigeria, prompting authorities to take preventive steps to secure trainees and educational institutions.
