Mom of a curious woman, fortunate to share home and work with my friend, addicted to education from both sides of the desk.
What do you like most about your task?
It is a task of continuous clean slates and, at the exact same time, long relationships. Every new student brings new stories and brand-new dreams, so the enjoyment keeps restoring itself. Yet we stay with our trainees for many years, and some of those journeys began a decade back and continue today. Being there for the first school days, the very first university offers, the exam results, and now the very first profession actions: it never becomes regular.
Describe a task or initiative you’re presently working on that excites you.
Echos Mentoring. It is a system developed around a trainee’s full variety of requirements, both current and future, working out beyond tutoring or pastoral check-ins. It initially took shape over 10 years of listening to what students really need, and it has actually because developed with the input of our advisory network of education professors and active academics. What relocations me most is that a few of our former students have now returned as mentors themselves. Enjoying my own graduates supporting our brand-new trainees makes Echos feel less like a consultancy and more like a household, and that, to me, is the genuine procedure of the work.
What’s a piece of work you take pride in, and what did it teach you?
My doctoral thesis on females’s hardship, for which I invested long hours speaking with disadvantaged families about their kids’s education journeys. It revealed me the other side of the coin in the very geographies we recruit students from: hardship, education and social mobility. It taught me how transformative education can be, and just how much work for disadvantaged groups matters. That is why we take on pro bono advisory cases every year, and why a few of the graduates we are proudest of are students on full scholarships.
What’s a small daily practice that helps you in your work?
Fifteen minutes of quiet reflection and appreciation. We work with the most valuable thing in any household’s life, their kids, and together with all the happiness that brings, stress and fatigue become part of the task. That day-to-day pause keeps my stress in balance and secures my optimism.
What’s one change you wish to see in your sector over the next couple of years?
Long-term consultancy, informed by data and existing developments, moving to the centre of education advising. Career courses are moving faster than at any point in recent memory, and a decision made at 15 now carries much more uncertainty than it did a generation ago. That calls for consultancy, which is itself adaptable and flexible, able to move with altering dynamics rather than duplicate a fixed formula.
What concept, book, podcast or conversation has stayed with you recently?
Zygmunt Bauman’s Liquid Times: Living in an Age of Unpredictability. Bauman argues that social organizations no longer hold their shape enough time to anchor long-term life strategies, and that people must therefore discover to act, plan and weigh their choices under conditions of endemic unpredictability. That is an extremely accurate description of what our we are walking into.
The qualities Bauman determines as vital, flexibility, flexibility, the readiness to alter course at brief notice, are precisely what we now need to cultivate in young people along with their academic preparation. It sits behind much of my recent reading, and behind a paper I am writing on graduate work, remote work and AI. Bauman explained this unpredictability long in the past, and he described it precisely.
What’s one piece of suggestions you ‘d offer to somebody beginning in this field?
Keep your enjoyment and your curiosity alive. The technical side, how applications work, how systems differ, can all be discovered. What identifies your success is how well you can truly comprehend the trainee and the moms and dad sitting in front of you, and how well you comprehend the world surrounding youths today.
