Announcing the 2027 international education settings on July 3, education minister Jason Clare, abilities minister Andrew Giles and assistant minister for global education Julian Hill stated keeping the planning level unchanged would supply “stability and certainty” while ensuring Australia’s worldwide education sector stayed resistant, top quality and globally competitive.

He added that the 2027 settings would offer “certainty” for the international VET sector while allowing it to continue delivering “sustainable development and top quality abilities outcomes”.

The announcement follows today’s 25% increase in trainee and short-lived graduate visa charges, which raised the subclass 500 student visa charge to AUD$ 2,500.
The changes also presented a separate AUD$ 2,050 charge for standalone English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Trainees (ELICOS), lower costs for candidates from ASEAN nations and non-award courses, while keeping lower charges for students from Pacific countries and Timor-Leste.
Topic to legislation introduced to parliament last week, the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) will supervise global trainee allowances for college service providers from 2027, while the federal government will continue setting the total National Preparation Level.
The statement builds on the government’s 2026 international education arrangements, introduced after its earlier effort to enact laws international trainee caps failed to pass the Senate, with the government rather continuing to handle international student numbers through administrative settings.
The 2027 arrangements also build on more comprehensive integrity reforms aimed at tackling poor supplier practices, enhancing the trainee experience and keeping global trainee numbers on a more sustainable course, the federal government stated.
Hill stated Australia continued to welcome “genuine global trainees seeking a premium Australian education” that was “terrific for our unis, domestic students and research study”.
He included that the federal government would “not withdraw from managing the size and the shape of the onshore global student market and ongoing small amounts in trainee numbers towards a more sustainable sector”.
