The relocation comes as Indian college organizations increasingly pursue abroad campuses and international collaborations as part of more comprehensive internationalisation efforts.

The proposed sub-campus will see IIT Bombay provide its academic offerings from the SUNY Old Westbury campus, beginning with certificate courses before broadening into complete degree and research study programs.

Rather than constructing a completely brand-new school, IIT Bombay has decided to partner with an existing university, enabling it to focus on establishing academic programs rather of browsing land acquisition and regulative approvals.

“Establishing a totally new campus would have required us to get land and acquire various approvals. By partnering with an existing university in the US, we can avoid these formalities and focus on developing courses and scholastic programs,” director Shireesh Kedare stated during a virtual press conference.

The first certificate courses will focus on artificial intelligence, sustainability and tidy innovation before expanding to undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs in science and engineering for students from all over the world, including the US and India.

“These will be certificate courses which can begin from 2027. Whereas beginning total programs will happen in due course of time,” Kedare stated, including that admissions will not be through India’s Joint Entrance Assessment (JEE Advanced).

Unlike existing exchange and joint-degree arrangements, “with this collaboration we will offer our courses on US land,” he said.

The organizations will initially concentrate on faculty and researcher exchanges, joint research projects, conferences and symposia while establishing brand-new academic programs.

IIT Bombay likewise plans to develop lab on the Long Island school. Kedare stated the organizations’ complementary strengths made the partnership a natural fit and that the institute’s comprehensive US alumni network would support the effort.

The agreement is currently at the Letter of Intention stage, with details consisting of admissions, tuition charges, degree structures, credit transfer plans and timelines for full academic programs yet to be announced ahead of the prepared 2027 launch.

India’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan also welcomed the statement. Explaining the partnership as “a living passage of knowledge between India and the United States”, Pradhan stated that it would develop “win-win chances” for students and academics in both countries while supporting the advancement of innovative innovations in frontier science.

The relocation follows similar worldwide growth by other IITs. IIT Madras opened its campus in Zanzibar in 2023, while IIT Delhi later established a global campus in Abu Dhabi.
