“With the brand-new CALEDO building, we are creating optimum working conditions for exceptional researchers who are conducting research study on topics important for the future. The advancement of ingenious solvents, for example, can enhance drug effectiveness to the advantage of all patients. At the exact same time, this new advanced research study structure will make RESOLV, the joint Cluster of Excellence of TU Dortmund University and Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), even more attractive to the best scientists,” said Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Federal Government, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and TU Dortmund University have invested around EUR90 million in the brand-new building and significant instrumentation.

Special labs

CALEDO is the acronym for “Center for Advanced Liquid-Phase Engineering Dortmund”. The four-floor building with an inner courtyard has 3,600 m2 of functional flooring area, with unique labs for scientists from the following three departments: Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Physics. Responsible for the structure’s building was BLB NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia’s structure and realty management authority), whose Dortmund branch formed a project group together with the Corporate Center Construction and Facility Management at TU Dortmund University. The building, with its reddish brickwork, rounded corners and ribbon windows, was developed by Gerber, a renowned designers’ workplace in Dortmund.

“What made the building and construction work so difficult and unique, apart from its unique façade, was the high demands on technical structure services. In addition to office space and conference rooms, we as BLB NRW have actually built highly specialized labs– and in so doing developed area for cutting-edge research at TU Dortmund University,” stated Gabriele Willems, Managing Director of BLB NRW. The laboratories are equipped with significant instrumentation worth around EUR10 million that permits cutting edge analysis for all elements of intricate liquid phase design.
