The High Achievers Program (HAP) brings together six universities– East Anglia, York, Exeter, Greenwich, Kent– to support trainees studying in China before transitioning to the UK for their final year and beyond.
Discussing the effort, Stephen McGuire, senior pro-vice chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor (international) at the University of East Anglia (UEA), said the program is designed to assist trainees “make more informed decisions about where they want to study”, while improving results across the trainee journey.
The program builds on existing ‘3 +1’ expression models, where students total three years in China before moving to the UK for a final year.
However, HAP intends to go even more by offering a more structured and supported path, including:
- Enhanced scholastic preparation before trainees get here in the UK
- Shared teaching practices tailored to Chinese friends
- Clear routes into postgraduate study
- Opportunities for outbound mobility from the UK to China
“We’re attempting to consider how a trainee journey begins with the earliest stages,” stated McGuire, pointing to summertime schools, preparatory sessions and ongoing academic support.
The effort shows a shift in approach among UK universities running in a progressively competitive global market.
