Public primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Area (FCT) have actually been directed to start an indefinite strike beginning Monday, following unsolved well-being problems with authorities.
The regulation was released by the Nigeria Union of Educators (NUT), FCT chapter, after an emergency situation meeting of its State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) kept in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
In a communiqué jointly signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Promotion Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union instructed teachers to comply fully with the industrial action and wait for additional instructions.
Moms and dads were also recommended to keep their kids and wards at home until more notice, as schools throughout the FCT are expected to be affected by the strike.
The union discussed that the decision followed the expiration of a seven-day final notice issued on March 11 to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which lapsed on March 29 without an acceptable response.
While acknowledging the minister’s intervention in carrying out the 70,000 base pay and the payment of 9 months’ financial obligations to primary school teachers, the union expressed issue that a number of crucial concerns remain unresolved.
According to the communiqué, a committee established by the minister on July 7, 2025, to harmonise exceptional entitlements and advise long lasting services to repeating disagreements had actually sent its report in August 2025, but it has yet to be made public or implemented.
The NUT stated: “After exhaustive deliberations on the commercial problems and the silence on the legitimate demands of teachers’ welfare, the Council resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall, with effect from Monday, continue on an indefinite strike until our needs are met.”
Amongst its demands, the union called for the immediate release and execution of the committee’s report, the elimination of the “jobs” condition connected to teachers’ promos, and an extensive evaluation of the 2024 promo workout carried out by the FCT Civil Service Commission.
The union kept in mind that despite giving an additional 28-day grace duration after the preliminary warning, authorities failed to respond meaningfully, leaving teachers without any alternative but to start the strike.
The development raises fresh issues about interruptions in the FCT education system, as thousands of trainees are expected to be impacted if the impasse continues.
